Sydney Family Photography Sessions: What to Expect

So! You’re thinking about booking family photos in Sydney.

Maybe it’s been years since your last family photos. Maybe your baby isn’t quite a baby anymore. Or maybe you’re simply realising how quickly the kids are growing and you’d love to freeze this stage for a moment.

But if you’ve never booked a family photography session before, you might be wondering what the process actually looks like. What do you wear? What happens during the session? What if the kids don’t cooperate?

Let me walk you through it.

First — hello!

I’m Sarah, a family photographer based in Sydney’s Hills District. I photograph families all across Sydney, usually outdoors at sunset where the light is soft and beautiful.

My sessions are designed to feel relaxed and natural. You won’t be standing stiffly looking at the camera the whole time — instead, I’ll gently guide you into moments that feel natural so your photos reflect the real connection between your family.

Once You're Booked In

After your session is booked, I’ll send through a detailed session guide to help you prepare.

Inside you'll find tips on things like what to wear, how to coordinate outfits for the family, and how the session will flow on the day.

I also send through location suggestions so you can choose a setting that suits your family best — whether that’s the beach, open fields, or somewhere surrounded by nature.

The goal is to make the entire experience feel easy from the very beginning.

The Session Itself

Family sessions are typically held around golden hour, which is the hour before sunset when the light is at its most beautiful.

Sessions usually run for around an hour, but the focus isn’t on rigid posing or perfect smiles.

Kids will run. They’ll cuddle you. They might get a little sandy or climb on your shoulders. And honestly, those are usually the moments that make the best photographs.

I’ll guide you throughout the session so you never feel awkward or unsure of what to do, but I also leave plenty of room for your family to simply interact with each other. Those in-between moments are often the ones families love the most.

Every Family Session Is Different

Some families are celebrating a new baby. Some are chasing toddlers through a field at sunset. Others are simply updating their photos as their children grow.

No matter the stage your family is in, the goal is always the same — capturing photos that feel warm, natural, and true to this moment in your lives.

After Your Session

After the session, your images are carefully edited and delivered through a private online gallery where you can view your photos and choose your favourites.

Most families find it hard to narrow them down once they see them, so there’s also the option to upgrade to the full gallery.

Thinking About Family Photos in Sydney?

If you’re considering booking family photos, the best time is usually sooner rather than later. Kids grow quickly, and these seasons of life have a funny way of passing by before we realise it.

I often like to think of family sessions as one hour of uninterrupted quality time with your kids.

No phones, no rushing off to the next activity — just time together while they run around, climb on you, hold your hand, or snuggle in for a cuddle. I’ll guide you along the way, but mostly I’m just there to capture those little moments as they naturally unfold.
